Pro-activity, to be at the exact place needed at precisely the right time to ultimately improve patron satisfaction and loyalty are keys to hiring and success at First Regional Library. Libraries are one of the oldest and most basic institutions in the modern world. Indeed, they are so important to most that citizens are willing to support access to libraries with taxes, donations, and even personal volunteerism. A vast cross section of the community can regularly be found using library resources all at once. At the busiest branch of the busiest library in Mississippi (by annual circulation), one is rarely asked the same question twice. To be a successful library assistant, adaptability, robust thinking, and creativity are required along with a strong work ethic. Independent decision-making, excellent public relations skills, and dedication are also very important. But the secret to getting hired and then not fired at First Regional Library is the ability to be pro-active in one's work. The ultimate goal is patron satisfaction and loyalty, which in turn leads to institutional sustainability and expansion. For example, one must not fear to ask a patron questions to better understand their needs. Often a patron has a very vague idea of what they want. The library assistant's job is to leave the patron with a specific, more focused target of interest. This means gathering information from many different sources quickly to effectively provide towards the patron's needs. Library Assistants must also be willing to volunteer for many different tasks without specific direction to do so. This ranges from inventory, general circulation, and media repair, to promotions and advertising, administrative tasks and scheduling, and even puppet shows. A team of pro-active Library Assistants with the patron's needs as their ultimate goal ultimately results in a pro-active library, and a more knowledgeable and better prepared citizenry....
