I check in donors at our Blood Donation sites, man the main switchboard at the chapter, do data entry and give oral presentations to military service members.

What's the secret to getting hired at American Red Cross?

Knowing how to manage in a crisis situation and using all basic business skills. Communication on all levels is one of the most important skills to have. Experience in business is a must. Must have some knowledge of human resources, marketing, and some financial experience.

What are the most challenging aspects of your job at American Red Cross?

The most challenging aspects of my work at the Red Cross was responding in a timely fashion to the many inquires from the clients. Additionally, there were differences between procedures at the Field and National levels. How would you describe what you did at American Red Cross?

The work was challenging and rewarding. I received excellent support from the Director that I supported. The work was primarily email and phone discussion driven. Knowledge of Red Cross policies and procedures and familiarity with the organizational structure was critical to strong performance. The ability to work well with all levels of employees was essential, as well as the ability to prioritize.
I provided support in functional areas of human resources including but not limited to recruitment and employment, personnel records, employee relations, job evaluation, compensation management, benefits administration, organization development, training, AA/EEO, and special projects. Assisted in the development and implementation of human resources policies and procedures and their dissemination through employee booklets, communications, and/or meetings. Prepared reports in conformance with legislated requirements or organization needs. Provided human resources services for the Biomedical (blood donations) business unit of the American Red Cross supporting over 425 clients.
