How would you describe what you did at BAE Systems?

As a LAN Administrator, I was in charge of multiple UNIX, NT and Windows 2000 servers and Cisco routers that are connected to the company Intranet. My responsibilities also included implementing the DHCP server to dynamically serve IP addresses to multiple PCs and setting up DNS servers for the department. In the course of my employment I have learned different UNIX shell syntaxes, such as Korn shell, C shell, and Bourne Again shell (BASH). I was responsible for researching and procuring the proper types of servers and operating systems for many projects. I was also in charge of maintaining a Gauntlet firewall that is used to protect our company from a US Navy Extranet. Another responsibility was to manage the access lists on the Cisco routers and provide static routes for internal users to access the Navy Extranet. I also ensured that the firewall was installed and setup properly. Additionally I was the Project Manager for the hosting of an Internet web site for our Navy customer. I installed and managed Cisco routers, including a 4500M, a 2500 series and a 1600 series. We currently have 3 remote sites that are attached to our routers through dedicated leased lines that terminate at our routers. Finally, I managed a team of other administrators to troubleshoot any computer problems that occurred within our department and consulted on problems from other departments.... read more

How would you describe what you did at BAE Systems?

As the Group Manager for the IT Infrastructure Support group, I am responsible for the management of all of the personnel that support both the internal and external customer LAN infrastructure. I have had as many as 29 people reporting to me from across the country. In this role, I am responsible for managing multiple projects as well as budgets. One of my tasks is to create the yearly IT expensed and capital budgets for the 15 cost centers in our organization. In the creation of the yearly budget, I brief the senior management on the current and future technology trends. As the year progresses, I monitor the budgets to ensure that the business unit does not overspend and to verify money is spent on the right type of technology. Overall, my responsibility is to manage a $1.8 million labor budget, as well as a $2.5 million hardware and software budget.

One of my other tasks is to create and review IT policies for the business unit. In the creation of these policies, I am responsible for familiarizing myself with both the Corporate and Sector policies to ensure that our business unit is not violating any overarching policies. As the manager of the internal LAN infrastructure, I am responsible for collecting and presenting metrics to the senior management that show the performance of the local helpdesk and uptime of the servers. I have also served both as a liaison to the Sector Architecture Standards Group and as a Sector representative to the Corporate IT Security Working Group (ITSWG). Over the past years, I've worked with the other Sector IT administrators on various security issues that affect the company across the US. I have also worked as the IT Security Administrator at the US Navy customer site, where I interfaced with the customer, set up intrusion detection systems, ran security penetration tests, and set up firewalls.
