That communication is no less a skill than the fields in scientific research.
I have a talent for communicating effectively. During my time at this job, the importance of communicating well (and being a sort of connector) finally 'clicked'. In years past, I looked at communicating well as simply being polite, keeping eye contact, avoiding mmms, and ahhhs, and the such. Now, however, I am seeing more subtleties than ever before - I'm noticing latency between speakers' phrases, the rhythms in conversation, and subtle cues that can relax tense situations.
What's more, I'm taking a more active role in using excellent communication to get more done, to convey more data, and how to make it stick. I read about the subject fairly frequently as well as how to present knowledge with skill, whether we're talking about seminar materials, small corporate class settings, or one-on-one training....

Provided executive-level administrative assistance for three scientists' labs. Authored process and instructional documentation for all labs serviced. Prepared numerous grants, manuscripts and scientific illustrations for submission on behalf of the senior scientists. Managed a high-profile lecture series, including travel arrangements, room scheduling, dining & entertainment, and proper expense processing. Created extensive process documents, refined existing methods, and trained people in one-on-one settings. Published quarterly internal newsletter and other promotional materials; included proofreading, technical writing, and coordination. Performed front desk reception duties as needed....
