What's the secret to getting hired at Best Buy?

If I knew that answer, I could set up a consulting business and make a ton of money! I really don't know, although I will say that if you refer to "what advice would I give a new employee" response, it would serve as my response to this question.

What's one of the projects you worked on at Best Buy?

I referred to this earlier when I wrote about the elimination of obsolete inventory. Please review that response.

What's the interview process like at Best Buy?

It was very informal when I started there. It evolved over the years into a more and more complex affair, but I can't say what it is like now.

What was your major and how applicable is it to your position at Best Buy?

Psychology. I don't think it was particularly applicable to the work I did, but I'm sure that some of the things I learned at St. Olaf in psychology came into play during my work, either consciously or subsciously (how's that for a psychology major, huh?)

What was the main reason for accepting your job (location, opportunity, money) at Best Buy?

I needed the money! I was unemployed (in 1983) and was urgently seeking work. I accepted a commission sales job even though I'd never done it previously, and I was not very good at it at all initially. After a few months, I became the company's top salesperson for the next 3-4 years!

What do you miss most about Best Buy?

The people. Some of the best people I ever met worked with me there, and I still keep in touch with quite a few of them.

What's unique about working at Best Buy?

I worked there when it was a small, struggling company, but one that had a shared vision of being the best.
We in fact became the best, and not by a small margin, but DOMINANT. It was unique in that a lot of companies talk about being the best, but can't back it up. We did.
