Experiences at Embarq (formerly Sprint Local Telephone Division)

When I assumed responsibility for Texas I also assumed responsibility for a project to install a 40 channel DWDM system in Texas. For multiple reasons this project had been ongoing for approximately 3 years and had been passed from engineer to engineer. However with the recession this was no longer acceptable as it was delaying EMBARQ from terminating several costly fiber leases.

Because this project had been passed through several hands rounding up equipment and information on the final plan was a bit of a challenge but by working with project managers I was able to get the information needed and get the project back on course. Fortunately the equipment was all on site therefore it was simply a matter of communicating with the field technicians what the final network design would look like and then doing anything I could to support them.

The final obstacle was adapting a legacy database designed to track TDM networks so that it could properly track a 40 channel DWDM system. Fortunately the project manager for this project previously was a database administrator. After meeting with him I had enough information to adapt the database records and issue orders to activate the system and save EMBARQ about $113,000 in annual lease costs....
