How would you describe what you did at Getty Images?

As one of the founders of Getty Images (by far the largest source of still and moving images), I headed a division of the company (called Digital Getty) that was responsible for leveraging our millions of analog content assets in the digital world. My team pioneered digitzation, encoding, indexing and search (we patented certain methods), and as eCommerce became a reality we embraced the Web, building one of the very first sites to accept a credit card back when Amazon.com was still in a Seattle garage! We successfully transformed an entire industry that was used to receiving film and images in analog form, to one that has over 95% of its transactions delivered electronically. How would you describe what you did at Getty Images?

Tasked with creating the front-end application, "Getty Images Producer", responsible for Flickr image/asset
ingestion into the Getty Images catalog.
Implement interactive UI features using YUI, OOP JS, Prototype and Ruby on Rails RJS. These UI designs
were created by Adaptive Path specifically
for deployment by Getty Images and Flickr software
engineering teams.

Service based front-end application speaking with many REST styled services including: Upload services,
2 Catalog services, User / Contributor services, and Flickr API services. This application - Producer - is built
primarily from Ruby on Rails, uses Active Resource models to contact services, generates custom keys for
authorization per resource query, and is the primary application users interact with when coming from
Flickr to Getty Images.

This is a high visibility product announced in major publications including: Wall Street Journal, New York
Times, Seattle Post Intelligencer, Washington Post, and many others.

What's the interview process like at Getty Images?

Long but typical for the industry. I spent 6 hours presenting my portfolio, and then meeting and talking with team members. I enjoyed the process because I felt like I got a sense for the company and the people I'd be working with there.
