What did you learn along the way at KeyBank?

What to do when I'm robbed. I learned first-hand! Luckily no one was harmed and the perp didn't pull a weapon on me. This is one of those stories I'll be telling my grandchildren. :)

What's unique about working at KeyBank?

The requirement for constant learning and the affirmation of that acquired knowledge. Since the financial world can change on a dime at any given time, we're always expected to keep ourselves updated on the latest banking news, trends, and regulations. We even get pop quizes from time to time.

Oh, and the amount of money you get to touch. You'd almost think you're rich... until you realize that it's not "yours!"

What music do you listen to at KeyBank?

We have a small radio behind the teller line that we can listen to. The Smooth Jazz station is what's usually on because it's relaxing and inoffensive. I love jazz so no complaints here!

What are the five best things you can walk to from KeyBank?

Jamba Juice, the Redmond Town Center (a ton of options for food--my personal favorite is the lunch combo special at Golden Chopsticks--or just killing time at Borders), Mikie's Brooklyn Bagels and Deli, Frankie's Pizza and Pasta, Anderson Park (the perfect place to take your lunch and a book on a beautiful day).... read more

What do people do for fun after work at KeyBank?

We'll head up to Kenmore to watch a former teller's rock band play cover tunes at JR's, a funky little dive bar. The bartender looked at me like I was crazy when I ordered a strawberry daiquiri. "Sorry, hon... we don't make those kinda drinks here. We got rum 'n' coke, beer, screwdrivers..." I feel a bit out of my element there, but it doesn't stop me from having a good time!... read more

What's your workspace like at KeyBank?

Clean. Clean, clean, clean. I worked hard to tidy up after the last occupant of my teller window. I particularly like how I have a distinct space to call my own; all of the teller windows at my branch are enclosed by counterspace. The teller windows are framed by wood that is over thirty years old but we're getting a remodel this month! It's going to be verrry nice. I also like my flat-screen monitor. It beats squinting at the old 6"x7" IBM monitors from 1981. We finally tossed those out two months ago. Big changes at KeyBank! Hooray!... read more

What advice would you give to a new employee at KeyBank?

I know it's cliche, but... NEVER BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS! Starting out as a teller and never having worked in the big world of banking before, I had plenty of questions raging through my head for my first six months of employment (and, to some extent, I still do). I was hurried through teller training in an atypical fashion, running transactions on my toes and learning banking rules on the fly. How did I survive? By asking a lot of questions from my more-experienced teller friends. (Thank you teller friends!)

Also, the marketing materials are your friends! When you're a teller you're expected to generate referrals. Those great pamphlets out in the lobby informing customers about that studly interest rate on a CD or the new type of Money Market account? Perfect for learning fast facts and generating conversation points to make your ten-second sales pitch count!
