What do you miss most about Kirby Inland Marine?

I miss working with my boss the most. We worked directly across from each other in a cube-like large room. We would have many conversations and joke around sometimes, he was very eager to teach me what he knew and would not hesitate to answer any questions I might have. I would definitely consider him one of the best bosses I have ever had and a great teacher.... read more

How would you describe what you did at Kirby Inland Marine?

I was the Administrative Assistant to one of the department Managers who was in charge of Third Party Sales. I assisted him in answering his phones, making travel arrangements, creating/maintaining excel spreadsheet and powerpoint reports for weekly and monthly meeting distribution. I also took a great deal of responsibility for the collections of Third Party invoices aged over 30 days. I was able to bring the total of the Accounts Receivable Aging over 30 days total, with assistance, from $300,000 + to $120,000 and less in 6 months time by phoning and emailing customers multiple times every week.
I also assisted in answering phones and maintaining reports for the Vice President of the Traffic Department of Kirby along with other general assistant duties.

What's the secret to getting hired at Kirby Inland Marine?

I was 100% myself. I explained very clearly what I was capable of and I believe that being a fast learner was key to getting this position at Kirby. I am very much a 'people-person', and this was a valuable asset for them since I would be working in an open environment with 40+ other employees.
