What are the three best things about working at Pearson Education?

I think the atmosphere, the work itself, and the variety of the work make Pearson a very unique work experience. Having your own workload, for me, is very rewarding because you can see your own progress and it's a great way to motivate yourself. The work itself is very interesting because you are handling shipments of textbooks from colleges all over the United States . . . everything from biology to pyschology. Last but not least, the variety of the work is most rewarding. One day you'll walk in and only have one pallet with maybe a hundred totes or so. Other days you go through two hundred and up. It also depends on what is going on with the warehouse. You may only have 50 totes but if they are all of one type of textbook then you may have to approach your job differently that day . . . I personally enjoy not quite knowing what to expect out of a workday.... read more

What's the toughest problem you've had to solve at Pearson Education?

I think the biggest obstacle with the job is the fact that the computer system is constantly updating while you are trying to process orders. Combined with the fact that other people may very well be working with the same book or books you are working with . . . it can become a headache to deal with. However, this problem has an easy solution . . . double-check your work.... read more

What are the most challenging aspects of your job at Pearson Education?

The most challenging aspect of this job is the amount of mental focus and discipline you must have in order to get through a shift. You have to imagine lifiting fifty pounds consistently from around eight o'clock in the morning to around four o'clock in the afternoon. Sure there are break periods and lunch, but you can't just stand around. On top of this, you have to stay mentally sharp because not only are you lifting things, you also have to interface with a computer system in order to keep track of all the books that you are processing. So combine physical and mental exertion and ultimately you will run into the same thing . . . mental fatigue. I say only mental because the job is more a data entry job then a strickly lifting job and accuracy counts for everything . . . "because I was tired" is not a valid excuse. An error on your part creates problems and more work for the other departments in the warehouse, again accuracy counts for everything.... read more

How would you describe what you did at Pearson Education?

I judge my success at a job by observing the responses I get from my manager and the other managers around the company. From what I could tell I did well, so well in fact that the company asked me to return to work for them again. As this was a temporary position, I'd gather that they were pleased with the quality of my work.... read more

What's the secret to getting hired at Pearson Education?

There really is no secret . . . if you are a hard worker, are ready to learn the computer system and you're willing to double and triple check your work, you're already ahead of the game. It doesn't hurt to have a sense of humor, especially because of the nature of the work. The worst part of the position I held at Pearson was the lifting, only because it would change from day to day . . . textbooks tend to get heavier as you go, but if you keep a positive attitude and remember to take care of yourself (it's a good idea to stretch and do about 20 pushups before you go to work to warm your body up) you'll do just fine.... read more
