What are the most challenging aspects of your job at Shasta College?

The most challenging aspects of my job are to be able to work with as many as seven students at a time in a classroom where all we do is tutor and the teacher does not teach. It is not that kind of situation where the teacher stands up in front of everyone and teaches. She's there for questions and to be the boss, and that is about it. The tutors do it all, and it is only a class for people that need extra help in Math, Reading, English as a Second Language, GED, and American Citizenship. I do not do ESL, GED, or American Citizenship. I do the Math and Reading part of it. I work with people from different countries like Germany, Algeria, Mexico, and here in the United States. Some of the students are slower than other students. They have some sort of disability that does not allow them to learn the way they would like. It is really challenging to tutor students that are taking Math and Reading at the same time. I have to keep their files current and put down what each student did during the time we were all there. Some of the students want me to pay attention to them ONLY, and I have to tell them that I have six other students to help, too, and that I will help them in a minute. I have to make sure my students sign in every day before they start their in-class work, and I have to keep a list of the students that were there. I have to remember to keep my time there, too, and to keep my time card current. Keeping their interest to not quit the class is kind of difficult because the students do things in their own pace. There are no tests, and there is no homework in that class. Many students complain because it is not a normal classroom, and it bores them.... read more

How would you describe what you did at Shasta College?

I worked under the Work Study program when I was a student. I first helped with purchase requisitions and posting them, getting the payroll checks ready to be sent out, filing, and any other things that the Business Office had for me to do. That did not last very long because there was not much to do in there, so I became the typing for the Interim Director of the Disabled Students Program Services program. He was the greatest boss I have ever had, but he did not get the director position of that program. That was too bad for Shasta College because he would have been WONDERFUL!!! I was a tutor for a classroom with slower students in simple math and reading while I was going to school. I got a 3.4 grade point average, graduated in May 2007 for my A. S. Degree in Business Administration, and I continued being a tutor in Business English, Business Communications, Beginning Math, Keyboarding I, and Keyboarding II. I can also tutor in a higher English called English 190, Spanish I, and Spanish II. I tutor one-on-one and in an in-class situation. I can do group tutoring, too, but they don't have me down for that. A lot of things have changed for the Disabled Students Program Services department because of the new director, and since I wasn't down for group tutoring, I will not be doing it.... read more

What's the secret to getting hired at Shasta College?

There was no secret to getting hired at Shasta College as a tutor or for Work Study except that the students have to have a 3.0 grade point average or better. I had a 3.34 GPA, so I got a tutor job easily and I got the typist job with the Work Study program. Trying to get hired for something better than this is really hard at this college because once a person get hired, he or she does not quit.... read more

What's the secret to getting hired at Shasta College?

I do not want to get hired at Shasta College. My education has been way too long, and I am anxious to graduate in May, 2008, get my Assocate of Science Degree in Administration of Justice, and hopefully get out of Redding, California, move to Sacramento, California so I can find the job that I want.... read more

What's the secret to getting hired at Shasta College?

It is easy getting hired as a tutor for Shasta College if you have a 3.0 and above. I had that with no problem. It is very difficult finding a position in the clerical field that is full time and that pays much more than minimum wage and that has benefits.
