The secret to getting hired in higher education is to be the most qualified and the most able and to demonstrate something extra--some extra creativity or verve that distinguishes you from the pack. I won the UM job in a national search of 800 candidates, some with degrees higher than mine, but I was able to convince the committee that I was the best....

I was an English Instructor for 17 years and taught many different types of courses, everything from Tutorial Comp where I had to bring kids who couldn't pass the verbal SAT up to college standards in 14 weeks, to Honors Lit, Southern Lit and Business Writing. I also designed several courses.I was also the Faculty Advisor to Undeclared Majors--helping these students design a program to uncover their skills without losing credits down the road. I was on the Curriculum Committee that chose the curriculum and also the Composition Advisory Board that governed the policies of the department. I was also the Faculty liason to Eaton Hall--to create a dialog between professors and students. I kept twice the number of office hours the university required and always received excellent evaluations. I left the University to move to Georgia...
