What's the secret to getting hired at University of Washington Medical Center?

I volunteering for a little over a year on the 4SE floor. Every week I performed tasks such as restocking IV trays, dialysis carts, room drawers, PICC and TLC blood draw kits, nutrition room, nursing cardex, forms, room cards, and gloves in patient rooms. Delivering and picking up items around the hospital, taking patient blue books to pre-anesthesia, ripping labels, and directed general support from supervisor. How would you describe what you did at University of Washington Medical Center?

I provide training and support on our clinical applications, primarily Cerner. I also work on entreprise-wide projects and have developed the QA Process for the training team and oversee a committee that approves what items go on the clinical desktops.

What advice would you give to a new employee at University of Washington Medical Center?

As an RN, I would say to sit down and look at what you want. Yes- you. There are so many departments at UWMC, and even if the job you want isn't currently posted (or says it isn't hiring new grads) there is most likely a place for you in each of them.

Evaluate the departments in detail.
Visit the departments. Talk to the Nurse Managers, who would be delighted to talk to a new prospect. Be picky.

You are a factor in your job. I know that nurses are caretakers by nature, but you will be more effective in your practice if you find placement in a field that is truly the right fit for your personality.
