Experiences at electronic data systems

I was recruited by Ross Perot to startup the Dealer Services Division for General Motors. My previous position of Manager, Dealer Computer Services for Volkswagen of America prepared me for this challenge.

Reading materials to name a few include several Project Managment Institute magazines if you are in the Project/Program Management job code, process-related literature if you're interested in process improvement, several training literature for various roles and endeavors within the company, company annual report, etc....

It is a place that affords the opportunity to do different things (no boredom), and has a great team of people to work with.

During a training period in Oshawa, I accidentally locked myself out of my hotel room as I stepped out onto the balcony and had to scream a colleague's name from the 7th floor to obtain a spare key from the hotel lobby, come up, and let me back in the room.

I am not familiar with any company blogs that people read at EDS; these would be the only kind (if they exist) that are acceptable during business hours.

There were several good teams that I worked with, but the one that stands out in my mind was a team that I was assigned to during my training at the Manufacturing Professional Program. We were assigned to analyze a parts assembly process at a plant in Oshawa, Canada, and come up with an improvement plan. We spent very long days together, and ended up re-designing the assembly line (even with ergonomic considerations) to the satisfaction and delight of the company's management....

I was leaving in the Seattle area at the time, and I walked into an EDS facility and talked to some people there about the opportunity to work at the company and how I could apply; I had previously learned about the company from a professor while in graduate school.

Get a mentor, know exactly what is important to you, and take advantage of the opportunity offered to grow and do different things, express yourself, show respect for others, and be prepared to be a team player.

I learned the importance of team work, the importance of treating people with respect, and the importance of growing one's skills.
