<title>Gabe, What did you learn along the way at Veris Consulting?</title>
      <link>http://www.jobster.com/at/answer/view/303327?answer_class=AnswerBase</link>
<description>I learned the extreme importance of writing maintainable code. Having worked on many projects that were originally designed and written 3-5 years earlier, I learned how important it is to think ahead when writing code or adding new features. I also saw how important good comments can be.

Veris Consulting is also my first introduction into more substantial SQL query writing. I wrote and modified stored procedures and scheduled jobs to run on SQL Server 2000 and 2005. I became much better versed at writing queries, using views, using subqueries, and joining tables.

The third valuable skill I learned was how to estimate the time required to complete a project. I learned that projects that are brand new to me have a learning curve, and it is better to research the project as much as possible before giving a time estimate to get an accurate measure of how long it should take. I also figured out that writing the specific steps that need to be taken to complete a project and getting a sense of the time it takes to do each of those leads to more accurate estimating.</description>
