I mostly miss the sense of purpose and importance of what we were trying to accomplish. I also miss the fun of calling my grandmother (who was a lifelong Democrat) and having her pepper me with questions about who I had seen in the offices. She got a big kick out of hearing that I had seen Tad Devine, Joe Lockhart, and Bob Shrum.

a walk to the library on my way to lunch to pick up books that I have

Ryan, What advice do you have for someone who wants a job like yours?

Build something in your free time! And do it all (database to the user interface.) If you are particularly interested in getting paid to be Ruby on Rails developer (which I have to say is about the best job in the world) start finding people who are interested in building a Rails project with you. Learn together.
