Lawrence, What are the five best things you can walk to from Amazon.com?

Definitely Uwajimaya - Seattle's best Asian themed supermarket. They have a great foodcourt, awesome produce selection, and a really nice gift section and bookstore. I loved being able to get lunch, pick up fresh veggies for dinner, and find some nice housewarming or other gift for friends.

Lawrence, What do you miss most about Amazon.com?

definitely the people - I met some of the smartest, most driven people at Amazon. There are/were characters there that I will never forget - some of whom became great friends. I've found now outside of Amazon that people who worked there are the most capable of actually getting things done at other jobs.

Lawrence, How did you find your job at Amazon.com?

I answered what amounted to a casting call advert for customer service reps for Amazon. This was back in the day when the wackier your resume was, the more likely you were to get hired. I recall typing tests and whatnot, but that might have been the temp agency - pretty much once you had gotten in the door and into training, you were hired two months later.

Once I held the elevator for none other than Jeff Bezos. When he got on I said, "Hi, Jeff! How are you?" and he said "Great, how are you?"and I said "Fine, thanks! How are you?" He looked at me like I was a madman. Thank god it was a three floor trip.

Lawrence, What do you miss most about Refugee Women's Alliance?

I volunteered at ReWA (hhtp://www.rewa.org) for a year as a Family English Tutor. It was a fantastic experience, and the thing I miss most is the immediate gratification of teaching people English skills that they need for their daily lives. I had many experiences where the things I helped teach were immediately applicable to women and their children getting medical care, buying food, and getting jobs. It was very rewarding.

OK, I didn't work there, but I was a student in the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Masters program there for three years. It's a tough program, and it requires your full attention. I worked through most of it, and I wasn't able to focus on it as much as I should have.

Lawrence, What do you miss most about Lifelong AIDS Alliance (was NWAF)?

I worked at Northwest AIDS Foundation in Education Outreach nearly a decade ago, and one of the things that I still miss was the sense of "doing good" every day at work. I knew that the things we were doing at NWAF were helping to educate people to save their own lives in the face of an epidemic. The people who were dedicated to that task were smart, funny, and genuinely giving people - I miss them, and the work we did together.

Lawrence, What advice would you give to a new employee at Volt?

Volt is a great vendor company if you want to work at Microsoft as a "v-". Volt has tons of positions at MS, and they have a rock-solid reputation, so it's a great way to try to get in. The one thing I might caution, is that once you are placed on a team at MS, Volt can be a little hands-off. Usually that's good, but sometimes it's hard to get to your Volt representative with Volt-specific questions.

Lawrence, What did you learn along the way at SolutionsIQ?

One of the things that I learned is that contractors at Microsoft live in a weird limbo state. They have responsibility for the projects they are assigned to, but no real power. SolutionsIQ was good about backing me up when needed, but the overall placement at Microsoft was a great education about the way that company works, and the trade-offs you make to work there as a contractor.

Lawrence, What are five lesser-known perks at Microsoft?

This is just one: Microsoft pays most of the fee for a weight reduction plan - one through the Pro Club, and another through Sound Health Solutions. They are specifically designed to lose weight, reduce BMI, develop good eating habits, and develop a lifetime exercise habit. Either is a great program, but I've heard the ProClub one is more hardcore.
