Alicia, What was the main reason for accepting your job (location, opportunity, money) at New Jersey Monthly Magazine?

I knew it would be an amazing opportunity for me. I was excited to take a step into the magazine world, as well as be able to work with a small editorial team. I also gained experience in reporting, editing and writing long form profiles, which is the reason why I pursued Journalism. I was concerned about my commute, which is close to an hour each way, but I knew I would be in a better place in my career if I accepted the job offer. It also gave me the chance to get to learn a lot about my home of New Jersey.

Alicia, What's unique about working at New Jersey Monthly Magazine?

It is a very understanding work environment. Many of my co-workers are around the same age, so even if we are swamped with work, we still get some laughs and good times. We invented Tasty Tuesdays, where everyone under the age of 26 goes for lunch on Tuesdays together. It gives us a little fresh air and puts our minds back in order for the rest of the afternoon and week.

Alicia, What was your most memorable summer job?

My most memorable summer job was interning with The County Seat Newspaper. It was my first real experience in journalism that was outside of the classroom and campus. It proved to me that I truly have a passion for news and that journalism was the path I wanted to take in life.

While working on Quinnipiac University's student-run newspaper, The Chronicle, our advisor, also one of my journalism professors was a huge influence in my life. She helped me start my weekly column and gave me the confidence to go outside the lines in journalism and in life.
