The project that has excited me the most at DWD has been the work I've done to create a comprehensive workforce plan for both DWD and for the State of Wisconsin. It has been very interesting. Producing the video that is attached to my profile was a lot of fun too.

One word - cubes! It's not an entirely bad thing because it makes it much easier to talk to my co-workers. The nice thing about the cubes is that the rooms with the good views (the lakes and the Capitol) are saved as conference rooms so everyone can use them.

Jenny, What are the opportunities for advancement at Department of Workforce Development?

There are too many opportunities to name. We are a very big agency, with people coming and going pretty frequently. We also like to hire within for some of our program specific positions. A good chunk of our employees started working here at an entry level and are now in mid and senior level management positions. DWD is your oyster.

DWD is a government agency, so interviews are usually done by a panel of three people.

Jenny, What advice would you give to a new employee at Department of Workforce Development?

DWD has about 2000 employees, and sometimes new employees feel like a small fish in a very big pond. I would suggest volunteering for inter-unit or division work groups to meet new people. Get involved in things like the Partners in Giving Campaign. Eat in the cafeteria. Use the DWD Workweb to learn more about the organization.

Jenny, What was your first job?

When I was 15 I landed my first job as a housekeeper at a local hotel. Luckily after a year I was promoted to work at the front desk. Much better. I didn't have to clean up after people and I could do my homework on the job.

I like to stay on top of current events, so my favorite websites are madison.com (local news), cnn.com (national and world news), and perezhilton.com (celebrity gossip). Of course I'm also always cruising jobster.com to add more talent to DWD's network.

Jenny, What path did you take to your current career?

My first job out of college was as a manager with a big retailer. It provided great leadership experience and gave me good exposure to human resources. Then I went on to be a "head hunter" with a national staffing agency before taking over recruitment for the Department of Workforce Development. I don't have any regrets about my previous jobs. They provided me with some valuable experience and skills that I use every day in my current job.

Jenny, What are the most rewarding aspects of your job?

I love working for government. I feel like I'm really working to make a difference in the lives of the citizens of Wisconsin, which is very rewarding. In my past jobs I felt like the work I did was driven more by the company's bottom line than actually helping employees. Working for DWD has helped put the "human" back into human resources for me.

I really like cheese. Seriously, don't laugh just because I live in Wisconsin! I'm a fan of everything from the Wisconsin cheese curd to fancy schmancy artisinal cheeses. As long as the slices are not individually wrapped in plastic, I like it. I'd love to be the cheese advisor for upscale restaurants and boutique food markets.
