Laurie, What's your daily commute like at University of Utah?

I have a UTA pass. It's about the only freebie the U gives to its employees. I have to be at work before 7AM and so I have to be out the door by 5:50 AM to catch the bus that will take me to the train. I usually get to work around 6:45. It's pretty quiet in the morning.
The ride home is more difficult. I get off at 3:30 and catch the train back home and wait for the bus or I try to get off a few minutes early to catch a bus then transfer to the bus that goes right by my apartment. The commute is another hour or two.

Laurie, If you could choose, what city would you most like to live/work in? Why?

Seattle, San Francisco, Portland or London...those are my favorite cities! Most of them are close to an ocean and none of them are miserably hot deserts!

Laurie, Who was your most influential mentor and what did they teach you?

Kim Goodman. He taught me that all aspects of life should be enjoyed and lived passionately and completely. That's why I want to find a job writing and editing...so that the 8+ hours I spend away from home will be filled with passion.

Laurie, Who are your role models?

William Shakespeare because of his tremendous ability to create amazing characters and beautiful poetry.
Kim Goodman, my soulmate who passed away in 2001. He took me from the brink of death and showed me how valuable it is to live life passionately...even as he was dying. He was the most remarkable, brilliant man I've ever met.

Laurie, What are you most passionate about?

It's kind of tough to say what I am most passionate about. I guess it all boils down to living a passionate life. For me this includes exploring every creative venue I can afford, being kind to others, and using my talents to benefit others.

Laurie, What advice do you have for someone who wants a job like yours?

Would you enjoy scratching out a meager living in a frustrating, unchallenging, repetitive work environment? Are you a masochist? If you answer yes to any of those questions, working here is just the place for you! Otherwise, run the other way as fast as you can.

Laurie, What path did you take to your current career?

I actually kind of fell into it. I worked part time in another part of the library until I graduated. I needed a full-time job while I looked for a job as a writer/editor/English major. Unfortunately, I've been looking for something better for five years.

Laurie, What's your dream job?

My dream job would be somewhere on the coast, possibly Oregon or Washington with a view of the ocean from my window. I'd be working with people who are ethical, honest, and intelligent. They would appreciate creativity and having fun. The salary and benefits would show that they appreciated my hard work and enthusiasm. The actual job would be challenging, include some writing and/or editing, and being creative.

I desperately want to be able to use my skills as a writer and editor. I haven't had any professional experience yet, but I have edited a couple computer documents for my boyfriend and miscellaneous papers for friends and colleagues.
