San Francisco! I love it! The people, the vibrancy, the contrast - the whole cosmopolitan-meets-metropolis feeling. I find the place invigorating and it makes me feel good about stepping outside in the morning.

A technical director by the name of Andrew Burgess showed me the importance of communication, objective setting and performance management in developing a strong, motivated and aligned team. I now live and die by personal objectives and ensure my whole team knows what's important.

There are two professions that I'd love to experience ; 1. Police Officer - I associate them as symbols of power, respect and integrity. 2. Hotel Manager - I've spent so many nights in hotels whilst traveling that I've always fancied myself as being able to run one.

I left school to take an apprenticeship in Electrical Engineering - that was the preferred route to a successful engineering career at the time. Within a year, I'd concluded that soldering, PCBs and Oscilloscopes just weren't for me but recognised that I continued to outperform my apprentice colleagues on the IT modules. I seized a passing systems developer role and found myself a new direction.

I once interviewed somebody for a support manager role. He was previously employed by a leading fish finger factory as their head of security but refused to answer ANY questions about his role as he was restricted under a code of secrecy. To this day, I wonder what sort of official secrets are maintained behind the doors of a fish finger factory.

A couple of years ago, I gave a breakfast briefing about a 'first to market' deployment on behalf of Oracle, to a group of London city investors. As a gesture of thanks, they accommodated me in the world famous Claridges hotel. On check-in, I received an immediate upgrade to a large suite complete with personal butler. I enjoyed being 'just me' in this unaccustomed lap of luxury, sitting with a TV dinner, watching the Oz soap Neighbours whilst my 'butler' poured me glasses of wine. Today, I look back at that with a smile and feel grateful for the opportunity.
