At Amazon, I re-built the Your Account Order History, Order Details, and Edit Order features for Amazon and partner websites, paying special attention to performance and security issues.

When I moved the Performance/Monitoring team, I developed a new hardware/software monitoring portal for Amazon engineers, incorporating multiple types of visualization techniques for keeping tabs on the many thousands of data streams regarding performance, reliability, etc.

Benjamin, What was the main reason for accepting your job (location, opportunity, money) at Jobster?

I really wanted to stretch myself and learn some new technologies, and Jobster recognized that even though I didn't know their technologies yet, I was still worth hiring because they trusted that I could get up to speed quickly. Too many companies only hire people for things they already know, but many engineers really want to do new things....

Benjamin, How would you describe what you did at Apple?

I worked for Apple's build and release department, which ensured that all software built by Apple had its source code and build tools documented and archived. I also worked on tools for breaking down Apple's domestic software installers and turning them into internationalized software installation packages.

Benjamin, How would you describe what you did at WhoWhere (Lycos)?

At WhoWhere, I extended the company's personal home page building software (used by many partners to offer their visitors ways to build their own home pages). I also built a new central registration and profile management front-end that unified all of Lycos' properties under a single sign-on and registration system. I built a new email address book application, including a general application framework supporting multiple brands and multiple languages (we implemented Spanish and English). I was also responsible for writing a reliable messaging receiver for information about what products our customers had purchased via a remote purchasing application and update our local database with this information in a fully automated way.

More than half my team were avid bicyclists, so quite a few of them would arrive at work in biking gear. Of course, most of them would change into normal clothes (ranging from slacks to t-shirts) -- except for one of our lead developers, who seemed to simply live in his bike shorts....

A friend was interviewing there, and offered to drop off my resume as well. My friend wound up turning down the Apple's offer in favor of a gig at Disney. And now Steve Jobs is part of both companies....

Benjamin, Myspace or Facebook (or neither)?

I'm on Facebook, but the onslaught of news about people adding or using applications that I don't care about is driving me away. Myspace is such a train wreck of design and usability that causes me to brace myself every time I click on someone's myspace link -- if I click on the link at all....
