My partners and I did a lot of everything. From developing new ideas to networking to taking notes during meetings, nobody rests during a start-up, especially not during its early phases!

I'm the resident IT guru, which means I manage everything from our 100+ node WAN that spans the USA, Active Directory and Exchange 2003 administration including Group Policy and some scripting, all the way down to individual workstations and printers. I manage our IT vendors, provide on-site and phone-based training as needed, and, more generally, keep our 80+ users up and running with as little downtime as possible so they can focus on work instead of headaches.

Sean, What's one of the projects you worked on at Property Advisory Group?

I designed a full-service data management project with the help of a local consulting group and led four consultants through the project's implementation, from start to finish. This was the largest technology project ever undertaken by the company and it was delivered on-time and on-budget. That project increased server availability to 99.9% and user productivity by as much as 50%.

Like technology leaders at most companies, I don't think there is a typical day for me here at PAG. Every day brings new challenges, new projects, and new goals to be met.

I worked with two other students, for 36 hours straight, supporting the duplication and distribution of thousands of CDs containing an anti-virus script that removed and patched Windows PCs against the W32.Blaster worm. During this time we also came up with a with the brilliant idea of providing a link to this same tool on the university's internal web site and received zero recognition once said tool was implemented.

This isn't to say that this was entirely a negative experience. On the contrary, that situation taught me to always remember to give recognition where it's due.

Sean, How did you find your job at Systems Supply?

I actually walked into the building looking for another company that I had intended to apply at. The man I asked directions of turned out to be the owner and president of another computer repair company! We got to talking and I came in for a more formal interview the very next day!

Sean, What do people wear to work at Systems Supply?

The great thing about field work is that most people don't mind if you show up to their business or home in jeans. Sure you need to wear a company shirt or some other form of identification, but that's for your safety as much as anyone else's.

While our workspace consisted of cubicles they were relatively large and the call center itself was very well lit. Employees weren't squished together and did have some privacy which was welcome in such an environment.

There's never a dull moment when you're freelancing. It has its ups and its downs, its busy-work and its "Oh no I have no contracts" times, but it's a blast, especially when you're young.

It's a small company with the aspirations of a large one, so server and network improvements are actually welcomed with open arms but ROI and productivity gains are demanded of each and every project.

I'd love to get into sales for two reasons: first, I started in this industry doing field support work and always found myself evaluating business systems and suggesting improvements; second, because - in my current job - I am constantly evaluating IT systems, finding bottlenecks, and implementing improvements!

Sean, What are you most passionate about?

I spend much of my time working with business leaders and users at all levels to determine how we can work together to improve productivity. I also spend several hours a week analyzing performance logs and coming up with process improvements, hardware replacement recommendations, etc. Not many people can claim to love being "efficiency gurus", but it's what I live for.
