Neil, What are the most challenging aspects of your job at YMCA?

Earning the trust and respect of a new community that culturally was closed to "outsiders". Being fresh out of college, I think I expected acceptance of my abilities to be automatic. It was not. Also, everyday was different at the YMCA. I really has to learn to adapt to different scenarios and community needs and adjust my plans to meet those needs. While this was a challenge, it was also my biggest joy. While with the YMCA, I did a little of everything. Ask me what my claim to fame there was?

Neil, What's the toughest problem you've had to solve at Camp Coca Cola New England?

Keeping staff morale high. We had a mix of new staff with staff who had worked within the camp for years. A 24/7 environment is very challenging and tiring and tends to affect staff morale in unpredictable ways. It was a constant struggle to keep employees energized and focused.

Adjusting to residential camp life. Prior to this experience, while many of my experiences were relevant and I was certainly accustomed to long work hours, I was able to return home at the end of the day. Residential camping is much different from day camping or traditional youth programming with an entirely different set of challenges.

I began as a volunteer as an eighteen year old freshman in college and upon displaying an aptitude for youth work and a love for it, I was hired to open a day camp. The camp grew from a program serving only 4 youth to one in which more than 100 children participated. I continued in a non voluntary capacity throughout college increasing the size and scope of the programs, and vastly increasing volunteerism on campus by involving a host of student organizations in planning activities for neighborhood youth. In this capacity I was twice awarded an outstanding citizen award by the Mayor of Boston and community residents for my contributions to the neighborhood.

Neil, Who was your most influential mentor and what did they teach you?

There have been so many. It is difficult to single out one, although I would have to say it was my maternal grandfather. He had a kind heart, a charismatic personality, and always made you feel like you were the "apple of his eye" As I became an adult my admiration for him became deeper as his love for others knew no bounds. He was married for 63 years, a well known person within his community, and never failed a soul with a kind word or with thoughtful advice.
