Anthony, What's the interview process like at Spatial NetWorks?

1. Do you drink coffee
2. Do you play well with others ? [ no difficult co-workers allowed here ]
3. Are you a professional?
4. Are you competent ?
5. Can I trust you ?
6. Are you worth $100K per year ?
7. Am I going to have to micromanage you, or are you a drama queen ?
8. Do you have a sense of humor ?
If you make it past the phone interview and get invited to visit our offices, then you will be subjected to a series of challenging, albeit relevant questions that cause you to use your noggin - if you clearly cannot, you don't stand a chance. We don't employ mindless robots and we are not a body-shop or a domestic "sweat shop". You must contribute daily to the bottom line success of the company, in whatever capacity you have and this requires everyone to think, and row in the same direction.

Anthony, What do people wear to work at Spatial NetWorks?

Clothes. normally business professional, occassionally business casual, almost never casual unless you are here on a weekend, or taking a personal day and messing around on the Great Wall of China or exploring the Pyramids of Giza. Shorts or jeans are acceptable then... ;-) [ is this really important to people what they can wear at work ? ]

Don't pretend you know everything and under no circumstances should you ever expect the compensation package that many universities mistakenly convey as "average", you are probably not worth it yet. You are a big risk to employers in several ways, don't overestimate your value and utility, and be prepared to demonstrate how you are not a commodity over time and that your contribution to the corporation is more than a piece of paper and a charming personality.

Cash the check. Day two - write checks to the 100 most influential and important people in my life; write a $2M check to the Wounded Warrior Foundation, 50% of which is hard cash and 50% set up in an endowment fund; with the remaining $8M, I would immediately invest $4M (probably in solar, hydrogen and electric fuel cell technologies, etc.) and I would take the other $4M and take 2 years to visit as many countries in the world as possible with my family, and when we returned...figure out what to do next.....gee...other than that...i dunno what I'd do.

That is a great question. As a geographer, I confess, I cannot answer it. I love Portland, Oregon as livable urban environment, but that was 10 years ago. Beijing, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Doha, Singapore all come to mind, but I could not stay in one place forever, and there are too many other cities to try. Why ? Wanderlust.

Anthony, What path did you take to your current career?

An accidental one. I "fell" into geography because, as I learned at the very last possible moment in my university career, I had to choose something, and geography seemed to be the central hub that all other sciences tapped into, on a regular basis, and since I'm pretty much a C student, this was for me. Through a series of jobs where I was hired for one specific purpose, my employer generally found out I was horrible at it and so promoted me to Management :-), where I generally perform better at the "strategic tactical" level. So, the natural, logical conclusion to that line of thought is "CEO" where the strategy of chess takes on a whole new meaning, and the "pucker" factor can make or break you.
