Courtney, What path did you take to your current career?

The path I took to my current career was quite straight. I graduated with a degree in Mass & Organizational Communicaitons and while in my senior year took on two internships, one with an advertising agency (marketing) and one with the American Heart Association (PR). I knew early on that advertising/marketing was my passion and I took every step afforded to me to make my goal a reality. The internships gave me an added edge in the real experience I gained and the contacts/references I made through performing exceptional work.

Courtney, What was your first job?

My first job out of college was for an ABC TV station whose parent company also owned five radio stations. Here I learned the basics in producing commercials for both TV and radio which because one is a sight medium and the other a sound, they are very much different when writing the scripts and using sound for effect. I also worked with some of the brightest minds at Disney/ABC with co-promotions as well as many other well-known studios in co-promoting their products with ours. My writing and audience analysis and synthesis skills were strengthend tremendously from my five years with these stations.

Courtney, What profession other than yours would you like to try?

this is probably the most difficult of questions to answer, not because I lack an answer but because I have too many. I am keenly interested in the technology sector. The advancement of technology as it enables consumers to do more for anywhere with fewer and fewer devices (maybe one day even a single unit). So I would say that outside my profession of marketing in the media industry, I would love to work more in the technology marketing arena.

Courtney, Who was your most influential mentor and what did they teach you?

My most influential mentor (indirectly) has been Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric. His business philosophies and strategies are honest and right on point without compromising himself or his company. He took a multi-million dollar company and turned it into a multi-billion dollar conglomerate using sound vbusiness practices that are fair, forthright, and winning.

Courtney, What was your best interview experience like?

My best interview experience was when the interviewer treated the interview as an informational, fact-finding interview asking open ended questions and probing for knowledge and experience. He/she responded offered like experience information. The interview was less intimidating and I felt at ease and open minded to where I could share past experiences without stumbling from nerves.
