Be passionate about user experience, no matter what your field. DON'T tell me how much you want to work 80hrs/wk, because a) I won't believe you, b) no matter what Amazon.com's reputation, quality trumps quantity, and c) your passion is what matters, not how fast you burn out. Know and love the product!

If something doesn't feel right, don't be afraid to call people on it. Everyone has their own motives, but not everyone's motives are true and honest.

A friend visited me in the control room before a newscast and happened to sit in the director's position, which had built-in controls for a big digital stopwatch above all the monitors. As technical director, I had footpedal control of the same clock, which he didn't know. Every time he thought he'd figured out the controls, I'd reset or pause just as he pressed a button. He tried for 20 minutes to figure out how to make the thing work.

Peter, What was your first job?

In grade school I scored a summer gig reviewing educational materials for the school district. I was on a panel of 5 students and 10 teachers. In junior high I had a summer job assembling discount coupon books; I made $0.40/book and worked all summer so I could buy my first computer, a Commodore 64. My first "real" job was in high school as a teleprompter operator for a local news station.
