One of my contacts had a contact at Waggener Edstrom. My contact thought I would be a good fit at WE and introduced me. I didn't even have my resume up to date. I was definitely a passive jobseeker.

The Jobster team... easy. The good folks at Jobster are dream partners and the Waggener Edstrom PR team is that just-right combination of creativity, strategy and execution -- with the common goal of driving results that move the needle for Jobster. They work hard and laugh easily. What could be better than that?

The toughest problem I've had to solve was to conceive, manage and execute crisis management and communications -- with my communications team -- immediately after the shootings at Columbine High School. I was part of the school district staff communications team in Colorado that managed all district communications, crisis response as well as facilitated numerous, high visibility events -- including a Presidential and Vice Presidential visit -- in the wake of the tragedy at Columbine High School.

My most memorable summer job would have to be a tie between solo warehouse worker unloading trucks full of file cabinets or shoveler / sweeper keeping a flower mill clean. Yikes!

Both taught me about ingenuity and that there is more than one way to get things accomplished. I now have a special appreciation for 'Dirty Jobs' on the Discovery Channel.

Christian, What was the last really difficult interview question you were asked? How did you respond?

The interviewer asked me to talk about my backbone, funny bone and the wishbone.

I said, "bones are living, growing tissue made mostly of collagen. Collagen is a protein that provides a soft framework, and calcium phosphate is a mineral that adds strength and hardens the framework. This combination of collagen and calcium makes bone strong and flexible enough to withstand stress. I then clarified that by backbone I assumed the interviewer meant spine and humans did not have "funny bones" or "wish bones."

Ha ha! Not really.

Actually, it was a great question that I answered honestly. I talked about how I take my work and results very seriously without taking myself overly seriously. Laughter and an upbeat work environment tend to raise spirits and improve work product.

I talked about making the case for an idea or recommendation. It's not good enough to sit back and be right, you have to make the case for your position - make yourself heard. Once the decision is made, you then support it and work to make it happen whether the team took your recommendation or not.

Regarding my wishbone, I only work in organizations where I am passionate about the problems we are trying to solve. I am a competitive person and my wish (or desire) is to see my company win and I want to play a role in making that happen.

Christian, What advice do you have for someone who wants a job like yours?

Write, write and then write some more. Take writing classes. Once you've written. Start reading. Read coverage. Read stories. Know media outlets. Know what kinds of stories they tell. Once you've done this, go back to writing.

Then remember your audience and your ABCs -- always be compelling.

Remember, what is compelling to you is not always compelling to your audience. Think about your story from the perspective of your audience when deciding if you have a compelling story to tell.

Seattle on a sunny day is hard to beat. Outdoor activities abound, the scenery is beautiful and the climate for innovative companies is world class.

I left a bit of my heart in Denver and wouldn't hate going back. 300 days of sunshine and great skiing don't hurt.

Love San Diego, New York, and Venice.
