Gabe, What did you learn along the way at Veris Consulting?

I learned the extreme importance of writing maintainable code. Having worked on many projects that were originally designed and written 3-5 years earlier, I learned how important it is to think ahead when writing code or adding new features. I also saw how important good comments can be.

Veris Consulting is also my first introduction into more substantial SQL query writing. I wrote and modified stored procedures and scheduled jobs to run on SQL Server 2000 and 2005. I became much better versed at writing queries, using views, using subqueries, and joining tables.

The third valuable skill I learned was how to estimate the time required to complete a project. I learned that projects that are brand new to me have a learning curve, and it is better to research the project as much as possible before giving a time estimate to get an accurate measure of how long it should take. I also figured out that writing the specific steps that need to be taken to complete a project and getting a sense of the time it takes to do each of those leads to more accurate estimating.

Gabe, What's your ideal work environment?

Fun, relaxed atmosphere. Open work area (tables or desks in an open area, not cubes or offices) with lots of windows. Cooler temperature (70 not 72 degrees.) At least two computer monitors. PhotoShop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver (or Komodo Edit, or Notepad ++), Visual Studio, MS SQL Server, MySQL, all installed and running smoothly. iPod on shuffle. Free coffee and doughnuts.

Gabe, What profession other than yours would you like to try?

I would love to try my hand at architecture. It shares many similarities with web design - it combines creativity with technical knowledge. My earliest memories include building with Legos and Tinker Toys, and I've always been drawn to interesting buildings. A deep need is satisfied every time I build something, and the thought of creating a unique free-standing building where once there was empty space is very appealing to me. I love the idea of designing something that people can actually use while at the same time creating something that is aethetically pleasing.

Gabe, If you won $50 million dollars tomorrow, what would you do first?

First I would pay off all debt my wife and I have accrued. Then I would by my wife's dream house and give $100k each to our closest friends and family. The rest of the money would go into savings/investments for my kids. I would still come to work the next day.

Gabe, How would your boss describe you?

My bosses would describe me as versatile, reliable, invaluable, and FUN. They would mention how they can count on me to meet deadlines, produce quality work, and adapt to any changes. It would also be impossible for them to resist mentioning how much energy, positivity, and enthusiasm I bring to the work environment.

Gabe, What path did you take to your current career?

I had a sales job working for an online company, and I was completely intrigued by our web development team. My curiosity was piqued by their ability to do "magic" on the web site to make it look, feel, and perform however they liked. I had experience working with graphics software (Illustrator and PhotoShop) creating designs for people, so I started tinkering with Dreamweaver. I was hooked immediately. I devoured online tutorials on HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP. I enrolled in school to get a second degree focusing on web design. I still spend most of my free time working on personal sites or side jobs, and I love what I do at work all day long. I started working in web design and I finally felt at home.
