I seek a mid-level software development position at a moderately-sized company where I can have an impact but still learn from coworkers with more experience. After doing internal/custom software for awhile, I want to learn the ropes at an innovative software shop.

1) Accessibility. This includes the obvious technological applications like website accessibility for the blind and deaf, but I'm also intrigued by the applications in architecture and urban planning.

2) Politics. I'm excited to use technology to assist in campaigning, activism, and election procedures. At the very least, technology can be better utilized as a tool for political awareness with applications like blogs or other social/user-generated media.

3) Music. If I were to do something completely unrelated to technology itself, I would like to be an arranger for high school to college level jazz bands, pep bands, marching bands, or drum and bugle corps. I would also enjoy going on tour one summer as a brass or visual technician for a drum and bugle corps.

Jonathan, What was your first job?

I worked as an attendant at a tunnel car wash and gas station in Spokane, Washington. I was often the first and last defense for ensuring the cleanliness of all customer's cars. This included prepping all cars (prerinse/wash), toweling all cars off afterwards, the occasional detail, as well as taking care of any full service fill-up customers and maintaining the overall cleanliness of the facility. There was the occasional 8 hour non-stop day, and this position required extreme attention to detail in a very fast-paced environment.

Jonathan, What path did you take to your current career?

Beginning with the days of Lego Logo in elementary school, I have been intrigued by the prospect of programming. When I discovered the web I almost immediately learned HTML and eventually CSS and Javascript. I began producing websites on a freelance basis, and did some limited web application development first with Perl and eventually settled on PHP/MySQL as my platform of choice.

After a short stint as a music major I decided that CS was more fitting and also got a job creating custom backoffice applications for the Career Services department at my university. This was a good place to practice my new Java skills as well as hone my web application development skills.

Since graduating I have worked at a small web development shop creating custom content management solutions. This was a good opportunity to see several public website projects to completion.

My current interests are rich client-side interfaces, user-generated content (read/write web), and application frameworks like symfony and Rails.
