Richard, If you won $50 million dollars tomorrow, what would you do first?

Apart from practical things like consult an accountant, investment agent, and tax consultant... which I'm sure you don't want to hear about, I would start a school for underprivileged children. I believe that education is fundamental to dealing with all of the serious problems in the world today.

I take it this is a metaphorical question. My parachute would be a reproduction of Rafael's Madonna and Christ Child. Hopefully the beauty and spiritual nature of the image will help to keep me aloft.

Richard, What was your most memorable summer job?

I think that often, the most influential moments of life are not realized until much further down the road. One of such defining points in my life occurred while I was in undergrad, teaching inner city children from Atlanta. The setting was a rural Boy Scout Summer Camp and I was the assistant director of arts and crafts. I instructed a drawing class as well as pottery, leather-working, basket weaving and many other classes as we were grossly understaffed. But I recall one vivid moment as I was demonstrating for a child a certain technique and just as he completed the task he looked up at me. In his eyes I saw the beginning glimmer of a spark. It was as if he had felt hope for the first time, a sense of accomplishment - an ability to control his own destiny. And it was in that moment that I knew that my calling was to be a teacher.first time, a sense of accomplishment - an ability to control his own destiny. And it was in that moment that I knew that my calling was to be a teacher.
