Rachel, What makes you a great employee?

I may not have five years of experience within the following fields I mentioned in my resume and cover letter, because I had been in college for about that amount of time, even during summers so I could graduate on time. I had transferred schools and switched majors, so I wanted to get my degree within 4- 4 1/2 years. I suceeded my goal and recieved my Bachelor's Degree.

So, what makes me a great employee is that I am not only loyal and hardworking, but even if I don't have that amount of experience, I have many useful skills that a company would find extremely beneficial vs. other candidates applying for the job, that may not have as many skills, even though they have had 3-5 years of experience.

Rachel, What have your past employers loved about you?

The past employers loved that I was hard working, organized, timely, when trained I picked up easily on tasks, they were impressed with how well and fast I type on the computer and that I was an eager learner. Also, they liked that I had a broad range of skills that was useful to their company, instead of just one specific skill. They liked that I was well-rounded and that I had interned at a few different companies to get extra experience, even though I didn't switch my major to Public Relations.

Rachel, What path did you take to your current career?

The path I took to get to my current career was to major in Art and Graphic Communications, which made me take many writing to communications courses. I then realized, that I wasn't interested in either of these fields but since I had taken previous writing and communications class, I recieved experience within the Public Relations field, even though I didn't realize it until later on. Once I realized that I wanted to change my career to Public Relations, I interned at a few different companies to get extra experience because I hadn't switched my major in college to this field. Therefore, by interning at a few different companies, I gained the extra experience I needed within that field. So, a combination of college classes and work experience has helped me reach my current goal.

Rachel, What advice do you have for someone who wants a job like yours?

My advice to someone who wants a job like mine is to intern at many companies where it has a field like Public Relations to get extra experience, even if it is non-paying.

I would also suggest going on as many interviews as you can until you find a job and be persistent.

Lastly, I would not only suggest a great professional cover letter and resume but also to create a portfolio to show some of your work from previous internships or mock samples of work.

Rachel, Who was your most influential mentor and what did they teach you?

I don't have one specific influential mentor. Although, the past four internships I worked at, I would say were mentors because they helped me obtain Public Relations and Event Planning experience. I also would say not a person, but a class was in a way a helpful mentor because it was a "Leadership and Management" communications class I took when in college. This class not only helped me become more comfortable with speaking in front of an entire audience(for example; every person in our class had to do a mock interview in front of the entire class.) We also became familiar with how to write thesis papers, resumes, cover letters and detailed outlines. I had been nominated by the head of the mock class project, to be the research coordinator for the Public Relations team because of my great ability to organize, meet deadlines, work with others, writing skills, etc.

Rachel, What was your most memorable summer job?

My most memorable summer job was working at Carlson Wagonlit/Donovan Travel. At this local travel agency, this was my first internship. It was non-paying but I learned a great deal of useful work experience. I not only assisted all employees in the company but answered the phone, researched information for employee's clients, printed and organized electronic plane tickets, reserved transportation for clients and many other useful experience that I was able to use in other jobs.
