Started it.

I built the UI (from wireframe to photoshop to HTML/CSS/JavaScript), prototyped the graphs (from XML to Flash).

I also play to role of head marketeer (social media, mostly), communications, customer service, evangelist, blogger and cheerleader.

I started the company in my spare bedroom in 1997 with a good friend of mine. I sold my ownership in 2005, and PangoMedia is still a going (and growing) concern. You go, guys!

Well, we've been acquired-- I'm not sure I'd change anything. But, if I were to go back in time, I'd love to have a little pile of angel funding. Considering what we were able to create in our off-time, I would've loved to see what we coulda pulled off in 6 months of full work-weeks.

There are none. With a core team of two founders, we were at the top of the food chain. However, to look at it with a different perspective, there was a great opportunity to build a working/profitable business. How cool is that?

TSSI is a government contracting firm with the ANC 8(a) advantage. While many government contracting firms tend to be feel clunky and bureaucratic, TSSI tends to feel more like a private sector small business. In government services, they have an unusual focus on growth, efficiency, and new business ideas.

Anchorage, Alaska is darn cool, with fabulous people and great access to the wilderness. I'm loving Seattle, right now, however.
Find a job with some adventure in it. After college, you have NO roots. No house, no wife (or husband), no pets, no kids, no mortgage. You will almost certainly never have that type of freedom again. So go get a job in a cool foreign country and forget about climbing the ladder for a while.

It would be owning my own company (for the third time!). More than anything, I love the ground floor. I love super-small web companies. I love being involved on a strategic and tactical level of a product. I love feeling like I can really shape the user experience.

In terms of the actual work that I'd do in my dream job, it would range from strategy (figuring out what the product should DO) to hands-on tactics (actually building prototypes using tools like Illustrator, Photoshop, HTML/CSS/JavaScript) to usability analysis and testing to online guerrilla marketing and SEO.

I've built (and sold) two companies from the ground up. For both of 'em, I served as primary UI designer in addition to playing the CEO role. I think most UI people (be they managers or in-the-trenches designers) on startup teams tend to have a hard time seeing the "big picture". Having played the startup game multiple times as a founder, I think I have insight that most product managers lack.

Build something cool. Don't talk about it. Don't worry about your resume. Just find a problem that people have, and build a piece of software that solves that problem in a unique or interesting way. If you're a web geek, avoid "guitar solos" - cool features or cool UI that doesn't help the user get what they want from your site/app. Use things like AJAX, JavaScript, CSS, and Flash for the good of your user, not the good of your ego. Don't launch ANY features that don't help your user in a clear and relevant way. Every feature has a cost (dev time, design time, QA time, maintenance time, page load time, taking up room on the screen, etc).

Tags (warning: Web 2.0 buzzword!). Tags are incredibly powerful in web apps, but don't do a darn bit of good if A) No one understands what they are; B) No one understands why tagging helps THEM and C) They aren't easy to add and manage. I think we're doing some good things at Jobster, but I don't think we've solve this problem to my satisfaction... yet.
