What advice would you give to a new employee at
JP Morgan Chase Bank?
It really depends on what part of the organization the new employee is going into and where they are in their career. I was given advice by several people while I was at JPMC and it was true for their position. Do ONLY what is technically your responsibility. If you go above and beyond, you will not accomplish what is your responsibility in a 40 hour work week. Go above and beyond, distinguish yourself, this is the only way to move ahead. JPMC has a great training program if you are just out of school, use it. Start your 401 as soon as possible. If you are traveling, make a travel bag of your cosmetics/shaving kit. Leave it in the suitcase. Show up on time, and do your work....

For the most part JPMC has been a location for me to use what I learned at previous jobs. I picked up a little more information and skills around Internal Audits, SOX, SAS70s, and PCI audits. I learned more about managing people. I learned more about how to manage projects. It allowed me to use all the skills I build at other locations....

What's the toughest problem you've had to solve at
JP Morgan Chase Bank?
With my skill sets and chosen line of work the toughest problems are almost always political. As I work across groups, I almost always find someone resistant of my efforts. It takes a while to win them over and explain why we are doing what we are doing and how it will help them. The second project is almost always easier because they know I am straight forward. We can have straight forward conversations....

What are the most challenging aspects of your job at
JP Morgan Chase Bank?
In the first year it was finding the right people/person to answer any specific question. I only accomplished what I did, because I had great management support.
In the second year it was the bane of all security/risk/audit personnel, we had a lack of management support for identifying and dealing with Risk/Audit/IT Security. The Re-orgs and multiple layoffs just aggravated the issue....

I was not internal audit. I was not external audit. I didn't manage their SOX work. I was a Risk Manager, which means I touched/managed Internal Audit issues, External Audit issues, SOX, SAS70s, and PCI audits.
With the management I had before the first major re-org, it was a sweet job. I accomplished a lot....

The secret to me getting hired at JPMC is very simple. They had a large issue. I had the right skills to come in and remediate that issue and handle some other issues they didn't even realize they had. Although I didn't know it before applying, the real item that separated me from the rest of the applicants is that I was a known entity. The manager knew who I was indirectly and was able to verify when I told him I could handle the issue, I really could handle the issue....
