What was your first job?

My first real job was working for a Lichtman's bookstore in Toronto, Ont. At the time it was a great high school job; it had flexible hours, it was around the corner from my high school, and the employees and customers were great. It was a small local chain of bookstores, we had about 5 stores, and about 10 employees in our store. We all got a long and got to know each other fairly well.

In restrospect, I had no idea how much that job influenced the type of work environment I like to work in. I continue to love to serve customers, I love helping them find that one thing, that one book they were dying to get. I bend over backwards to make things work out. Will the paperback copy suffice? I enjoy helping customers navigate the world of choices. I enjoy working in smallish teams (around 5 to 12) that end up creating a family type working environment where everyone cares.

In the end Lichtman's closed, but my memories of the staff, customers and the energy around this great bookstore carry on.
