Who was your most influential mentor and what did they teach you?

Stephen Isard (my doctoral adviser) taught me how to do research
in natural language processing. Just as important, he taught me to use whatever was needed to solve the problem, whether it is maths, psychology, logic, linguistics, programming or simple common sense.
