What profession other than yours would you like to try?
I would love to be a research scientist; almost any field would do. I read about advances in genetics, anthropologists living in tents in exotic places making exciting discoveries, neuroscientists discovering how different the brain really works from our everyday view, or physicists searching for the Unified Field, and I wish I were doing what they were doing....

How would you describe your time at Sun Microsystems?
I was part of the hardware architecture team working on some of the coolest computers on the planet. I created performance models in Java for large servers, including Starcat and Rock/Supernova. I debugged hard problems, and worked to ensure the accuracy of our models.

I was on the team which was developing a SONET system. I participated in the requirements analysis and design of the system, then wrote two interface layers, one a hardware abstraction layer between hardware and platform software, and one between platforma software and application software.

How would you describe your time at Bay Networks?
My job at Bay Networks was the best job I've had. I got to do many new things and learn many new skills. I became an expert in GNU, and wrote assemblers/linkers for two new data communications processors. I managed a team which built an innovative, first-in-class simulation system which allowed software developers to write a complex body of code prior to hardware arrival. I got the opportunity to support a large group of engineers, solving hard problems to ensure smooth-running of the project....

How would you describe your time at Microway?
This was my first job after getting my B.S. in Computer Science. I rapidly worked my way up to Senior Compiler Engineer by improving the quality of our products. I fixed long-standing bugs in our compiler libraries which led to significant improvements in the performance of our products, and ported our compiler and libraries to new platforms, including Windows....

How would you describe your time at Peace Corps, Nepal?
I lived and taught in a village in the far west of Nepal, which was remote and poor. I taught 80-90 kids at a time crowded into small classrooms. I lived with a family and participated in so many interesting activities. Living as a Peace Corps volunteer in such surroundings is something you never get over....

I had been a high school French teacher, and decided to study computer science...what a switch! I had a background in linguistics, and found I loved computer languages, automata theory, and compilers. I had excellent teachers, particularly David Butcher, who taught me so much about languages and compilers and was my senior project advisor....

An Awakening! I got to meet the most interesting people, who had lived abroad in some of the most interesting places. I learned so much about teaching, and thinking, by learning to teach languages. I got to indulge my love of languages and linguistics. And Brattleboro was a great place.

I took a leave of absence from Yale and went to Paris to study. I lived in a maid's room on the 7th floor of an apartment building by the Museum of Man across from the Eiffel Tower. I took classes at the Sorbonne, particularly languages, Old French, Latin, and ancient Greek. Paris was an experience!

How would you describe your time at Yale University?
I came to the Ivy League from a not terribly-distinguished public high school, in comparison to the private schools many classmates attended. It was a struggle, but through hard work and long hours, I held my own. I discovered an aptitude and love for languages, taking German and Latin.
