How would you describe your time at uFunctional?

I didn't fit any of HR slots (programmer, business analysis, project manager, development manager) so I struck out on my own.

I've really enjoyed it. As an outsider, I get to help software-intensive companies in ways an insider never could. I am able to interact as a peer with both technical
and non-technical people at every level in the organization.

I've served as a short-term CIO, a program manager, data architect, Access developer, and business analyst (all for the same client!), and a statistician.

I've assessed software business cases and advised start-ups. I've helped 200-person IT shops do their first Scrum project and come to grips with cross-functional teams.

I've also had to build a professional network, learn to use social networking tools (LinkedIn and Twitter), build and run my own Wordpress-based website and blog.

I've also counseled others on their career direction and helped them find employment.

Then there's contracting, invoicing, insurance, and other aspects of running a small business.

How would you describe your time at university of illinois at c...?

I was nervous about going "back to school" after 23 years, but I really enjoyed it.

Introduction to Bioinformatics was well taught and hard (summer session, seven weeks).

Microarray Analysis was a bit disappointing.

Molecular Modeling was difficult but a lot of fun. Modeling proteins on a
laptop...

It was all distance education. The recorded lectures were of varying quality, and the teaching assistants and fellow students were all helpful.
