After spending over 20 years in positions like VP of HR, Recruitment and Business Unit Manager, etc., I have found that dealing with college graduates has changed. When I initially started in HR we found that many universities were not encouraging students to get involved.

I would like to step backwards on this question before going forward. As a student, you need to make sure you have internships and extra curricular actifvities that are relavent to the job you are seeking when you graduate. When putting your resume together make sure you emphasize those internships and activities and use ACTION words to show your involvement.

At the end of each interview, you need to ask the interviewer if they have any concerns about your ability to perform the role based upon the interview. If they do, clarify those concerns before you leave and make sure you follow up with a thank you letter that serves a dual purpose. First, make sure you thank them for their time and include two things that were discussed in the interview that you know you can do and state how you will do them or how you have done them. Give examples of your abilities and never answer a question with the typical yes I've done that or yes, I can do that. Show the HR professional how you can do it.
