What advice do you have for someone looking for their first job out of college?
My Dream Job?.......to be a coach/facilitator in the world of 'inspiration' and self-care. I feel that I have many years of experience and insight to draw from. My greatest mentor ws a teacher, in fact my grade 9 teacher, though it was not until I was in my 30's that we re-connected and develped a great friendship. Sadly, she died quite soon after this and I felt very shattered by her loss. Nursing is a profession I do not recommend easily to people as I have had many issues with the 'top-down' aspects of the system, meaning with staff and patients in hospitals and other institutions; for this reason I found that I preferred home care settings as the people/clientele are in their own settings and WE needed to defer to them for this reason. They were also happier, calmer and better able to 'take in' what was taught them. Nursing IS as well--paid profession and it requires someone who is able to not only do the required assignments but also FEEL or SENSE what people are not able to express verbally. Very often the "routines" of the unit or the RULES deemed so by someone not necesarily in tune with the setting are what dictate the way PEOPLE are treated, and I do not agree with this. YES, there is a need for certain guidelines, I totally agree, but who is watching and evaluating these regularly to see if they - and others - aemeeting the needs of the client/patient AND the conscientious Nurse?...
