What advice do you have for someone looking for their first job out of college?

Do what you love to do and the money will follow. Remember, you can worry or you can work but you dont have time to do both. Right out of college before going to law school I already had an established business. I can remember the presssure on my peers to make a big salary but they had little experience. When you first graduate it is the best time to discover and explore opportunities you might not otherwise have thought about. I am not suggesting you undersell yourself but dont be afraid to start at an entry level salary and work your way up from there. Thomas Edison once said, "Most people will miss an opportunity because it wears overalls and looks like work." Get experience under your belt and master your skills. As time goes on, you'll realize your worth. If you decide you dont like the industry or company keep your resume updated and circulating. There is nothing wrong with changing companies a few times early on to find your niche. Just be careful to not have too many short term job changes on your resume which might make you appear unstable. I see an advantage to going into entry level positions to learn an industry and get your feet wet. Five years down the road no one will care about your GPA (it will fall off your resume)and you won't have the entry level option to test drive a career path. Soon enough you will run into the dreaded "over qualified" category which is harder to overcome than the lack of experience expected at entry level.... read more
