What advice do you have for someone who wants a job like yours?

Start yesterday. It's not enough to understand HCI or IA or UCD; you have to have a core understanding of the technologies you work with, what their limitations are, what he goals of the business are and then you need to translate that into something that your lowest common technology denominator (LCTD) can utilize with a low learning curve.

Learn how to read Business Requirements. Better yet, take a page from really good Business Requirements and figure out how to implement that into your User Requirements.

And, above all else, get a thick skin!
