How would you describe your time at Arcade Publications?

As Marketing Coordinator for Arcade Publications, I had my first taste of working for a small, independent publishing house. As a newly established publisher, Arcade had no media connections, no brand recognition and no established reputation to carry the product. It was my role to start building up these connections and to generate media and public awareness of Arcade as a new player in the industry. Although working at Arcade was vastly different experience to my previous roles, it required many of the same skills - the ability to network, communicate, build and manage databases and write enticing marketing and jacket copy. I also assisted the publisher with the editing of his first manuscript, and organized Arcade's first book launch.... read more

How would you describe your time at The University of Melbourne...?

Working as a Writing Tutor was an immensely beneficial experience for me. I worked with students from The University of Melbourne from all disciplines and all levels to help them improve their written communication skills. One day I'd be working on a chemistry PhD, the next I'd be attacking an freshman paper on film noir. The role afforded me exposure to such a diverse range of writing, and helped me realize the extent to which clarity, cohesion, structure and strength of argument are the foundations of a good piece of writing - not the content itself.... read more

How would you describe your time at Oxford University Press?

My time as a Development Editor with OUP was pivotal in terms of building my project management, editorial, author management, copy writing and marketing skills. I also developed rigorous market research and interviewing skills, and honed my interpersonal and negotiation capabilities. I oversaw the development of up to 25 publishing projects at any given time, which required exception time management skills. I also had significant input into the design and production values of textbooks I developed.... read more

How would you describe your time at Oxford University Press?

My 'foot in the door' position in the publishing industry was exhilarating, challenging and was the job I had been pursuing since I graduated from my undergraduate degree. I loved the fast-paced nature of sales and marketing, and was in my element providing administrative and clerical support to more senior members of staff. I primarily designed and wrote marketing materials, and also dealt with media enquiries and review requests, managed imported stock for the trade division of OUP, ran sales reports, organized book launches, and learned how a publishing house operates. I left this entry-level when I was promoted to the role of Development Editor.... read more

How would you describe your time at The University of Melbourne?

The Masters of Arts (Publishing and Editing) was a terrific way for me to broaden my publishing skills and knowledge of the industry. I was able to overload and fast-track my Masters Degree (with the approval of the course convener) so as to complete it in one academic year. I undertook units in magazine and digital publishing, design, globalization theories and their relevance to the publishing industry, among others. I also concreted my line and conceptual editing and proofreading skills through formal training.... read more

Meredith Rees worked as marketing coordinator for Arcade Publications in 2007, which involved developing and implementing marketing materials and media releases, and dealing with public institution stakeholders and the media. Meredith communicated our brand effectively and developed our reach. She's efficient, can juggle a range of tasks and deadlines, and has great ideas. And she's fantastic to work with.

I worked with Meredith at OUP in Australia from 2005 to 2007. She consistently had a hard working and professional approach to her work, managing to juggle a wide and varied workload while meeting required deadlines. Meredith was a popular member of staff, who worked well with colleagues from all departments and external stakeholders. She was a member of social committees, involved in the organisation of the office Christmas party and other functions.
