For over 30 years, Crain's Chicago Business has been the premier source of local business news and information for the Chicago area's influential business executives. Every week Crain's print edition delivers scoop-oriented articles, enlightening features and invaluable industry rankings. Crain's award-winning Web site, ChicagoBusiness.com, is an essential online tool for news, information and statistics about doing business in Chicago.
We are seeking an experienced Saxotech developer to work for us on a part-time basis.
Job Responsibilities
* Maintain, troubleshoot and enhance all aspects of the Crain's Chicago Business Web site, ChicagoBusiness.com com, including its content management system, social networking platform, e-mail distribution provider, ad server, video hosting provider, web analytics package, market data supplier, etc.
* Consult with internal business units to define technical requirements and capabilities, establish user workflows and provide project schedules to ensure successful and timely delivery of new online products.
* Implement online initiatives by employing all phases of the software development lifecycle (design, build, test and maintain).
* Integrate, manage and support relationships with 3rd party application providers (Brightcove, Pluck, etc.).
* Stay abreast of emerging technologies, relevant APIs, industry best practices and Web usability standards.
Job Requirements
* Expert in HTML/CSS. Capable of quickly creating lightweight (table-less), intuitive, search engine optimized HTML and CSS templates.
* Proficient in Javascript including AJAX, JSON, JQuery, YUI and other Javascript frameworks.
* Knowledge of a server side scripting language (PHP, ASP, JSP, etc.)
* Previous experience with template-based content management systems preferred.
* Proficient in SQL and database fundamentals (normalization, joins, schemas, etc.).
* Proficient with Photoshop. Capable of slicing up a Photoshop image and creating web compatible images.
* Strong Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Access).
* Knowledge of mobile technologies (WAP, Blackberry Apps, iPhone Apps) a plus.
* Knowledge of SaxoTech Online (publicus) content management system and templating language a plus
* Knowledge of audio and video encoding/editing a plus.
* Capable of learning quickly and possesses strong desire to keep up with the latest web technologies.
* Highly detail oriented.

Insurance Analytics is an entrepreneurial department within the larger client Analytics division. The client is a major player in modeling and quantitative analysis related to credit, fraud detection, identity verification, account management, mortgage default/foreclosure, capital markets risk, insurance loss, pre-screen marketing, retention, loyalty, cross-sale and most other data-driven efforts in the consumer financial industry. Insurance Analytics is a small but rapidly growing unit, which aims to design, create and offer innovative data-driven products to the property and casualty insurance as well as life insurance industry. They are aided by existing business with most of the top twenty and a large number of small and mid-size P&C insurance carriers. This gives them the freedom to explore external data sources and new statistical techniques, and are excited about delivering a whole new generation of solutions.
You will apply your highly developed analytical skills to work on all aspects of the insurance value chain, ranging from pricing models, fraud detection, process triaging to a variety of marketing-related models in customer acquisition, retention, cross-sale, event-based triggering and budget allocation
Responsibilities:
1. Independently executes of data analysis and modeling projects from project/sample design, business review meetings with internal and external clients deriving requirements/deliverables, reception and processing of data, performing analyses and modeling to final reports/presentations, communication of results and sales support.
2. Utilizes advanced statistical techniques to create high-performing predictive models and creative analyses to address business objectives and client needs
3. Manages staff (as the group grows) including goal setting, performance evaluation, effective resource allocation and career/skill development, hiring and training
4. Proactively and effectively communicates in various verbal and written formats with internal stakeholders on product design, data specification, model implementations, with partners on collaboration ideas and specifics, with clients and account teams on project/test results, opportunities, questions. Resolves problems and removes obstacles to timely and high-quality project completion
5. Follows industry trends in insurance and related data/analytics businesses. Contributes ideas and actively participates in the investigation and research of new processes, resources and technologies that can potentially be implemented to provide improved customer solutions or to broaden their analytic consulting and related services capabilities.
6. Assures compliance with regulatory and privacy requirements during design and implementation of modeling and analysis projects.
7. Travels to client and partner meetings as needed (probably once per month or less)
Required qualifications:
* Graduate-level degree with concentration in a quantitative discipline such as statistics computer science, mathematics, economics, or operations research OR Associateship/Fellowship in the Casualty Actuarial Society.
* 5+ years of experience with statistical modeling and data mining in a P&C insurance context using large and complex datasets. Experience with personal lines rating plan modeling is a strong plus. Knowledge of credit attributes is preferred but not required
* 2+ years of management experience. Ability to effectively manage own and associates time while multitasking between multiple projects in a dynamic business environment with a variety of internal stakeholders, partners and customers
* Strong verbal and written communications skills, listening and teamwork skills, and effective presentation skills. This is absolutely essential since you will have a lot of exposure to different internal groups (data, IT, product and sales) as well as third-party partners and customers (insurance companies).
* Expertise in statistical modeling techniques such as linear regression, logistic regression, GLM, tree models (CART, MART, CHAID), cluster analysis, principal components, and feature creation, validation.
* Programming experience with SAS (STAT, macros, EM) and other statistical software (R, SPSS, Matlab). UNIX experience is a plus
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
