 Position:  FHA/VA Mortgage Underwriter

Supervisor:  Director of Operations

Department Summary:  Underwriting department reviews and analysis all loans. Underwriting is involved in ensuring that all guidelines set by NFM Inc., FNMA, FHLMC, FHA, and VA are being followed. The Underwriting staff are familiar with federal, state, and company requirements, compliance laws, and lending regulations and have the resources to help prevent or resolve any issues regarding a loan package if they arise.

Position Summary: Position is responsible for mortgage loans originated by correspondents according to guidelines set by NFM, Inc., FNMA, FHLMC, FHA, and VA, for underwriting loans and ensuring compliance with department guidelines, state and federal laws, and lending regulation. Position will clear conditions and expedite loan closings. 

Responsibilities:

·                                            Underwrite FHA, Jumbo, and Conforming loans

·                                            Approve, decline or counter offer loans within limits of assigned authority.

·                    Underwrite a minimum 50 units per month. Maintain a daily workload as needed to ensure prompt turnaround time as dictated by senior management. 

·                    Approve, decline, or suspend/return residential mortgage loan submissions; must be responsible to meet deadlines when heavy periods of volume exist throughout the month. 

·                                            Function as a technical resource to business channel associates. 

·                                            Assist in correction of Delivery Violations on specific files as required.

·                                            Enter complete and accurate data in systems to ensure data integrity.

·                                            Support team members to identify potential solutions/alternatives for difficult/denied loans.

·                                            Assist in orientation and training of department personnel.

·                                            Maintain knowledge of underwriting guidelines and stay current with department requirements.

·                                               Measure all mortgage loan submissions for underwriting decisions based on company quality control plans and investor/regulatory compliance.

·                                               Provide prompt, quality service to the originating branches and correspondents in a friendly and professional manner.

Education:  

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience plus five (5) or more years of mortgage underwriting experience, including two (2) years of FHA or VA.

Experience:  5 year(s) of relevant experience required

QUALIFICATIONS:

·                                                                                            Underwriting designations preferred

·                                                                                            FHA Direct Endorsement Underwriting designation required

·                                                                                            VA experience desired

·                                                                                            Experience with both AUS and manual underwriting methods including DU and LP

·                                                                                            Advanced knowledge of real estate values and credit analysis

·                                                                                            Good mathematical skills and proficient computer skills

·                                                                                            Thorough understanding of Processing, Underwriting and Closing procedures

·                                                                                            Knowledge of conforming and non-conforming underwriting standards

·                                                                                            Previous automated underwriting experience

·                                                                                            Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to establish strong customer relationships

Specific Knowledge Requirements:
Minimum five (5) years experience in mortgage underwriting, and solid understanding of FHA or VA regulations.  

Knowledge, understanding, and experience working with HUD/FHA required.
