I've enjoyed working with Andrew Birkett recently (www.nobugs.org). I am continually delighted with the level of automation he achieves at the linux command line. For example, aliases are a very powerful tool to make you more efficient. Can you create a new alias without opening up your favorite editor? You should be able to!

source ~/.aliases
}

This is somewhat meta, but little bits like this add up to a pleasant working environment that lets you focus on the job at hand....
