What is the most exciting thing you plan to do this summer?

The most exciting thing I will be doing this summer is serving as Delta Flight Sergeant for the Oklahoma Wing of the Civil Air Patrol's summer cadet encampment.

Civil Air Patrol, the official civilian Auxiliary of the United States Air Force, operates the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Cadet
Program. One aspect of the Cadet Program is annual summer encampments, during which cadets are taught teamwork and leadership skills in a military-like environment.

Having completed my basic encampent as a Cadet Airman in 2006, I have now returned as an encampment staff member, a Cadet Master Sergeant serving as the Delta Flight Sergeant.

All encampments are mostly cadet-run, with adult "senior members" present for supervision. As Delta Flight Sergeant, I will be responsible for teaching approximately 8-10 basic cadets (Delta Flight) the skills they need to succeed in Civil Air Patrol, in school, and in life. I will teach them things like Drill & Ceremonies (marching), customs & courtesies, and leadership skills through teamwork scenarios.

Encampment is lots of fun, and I am really excited to be back as staff!

How would you describe your time at Oklahoma City National Memo...?

As a Volunteer in the Memorial Volunteer Program (MVP), I help accomplish a variety of duties every day I volunteer.

For example, one of the main functions of this job is to provide visitors' services by answering questions about the site, the event, and the museum, by directing visitors on
where to go/what to do within the museum, and helping with the various special events hosted at and by the National Memorial foundation.

To perform the tasks of this job efficiently and correctly, I have had to memorize a vast amount of history related to the bombing of Oklahoma City, the site itself before and after the bombing, the significance and symbolism behind the Memorial, and other subjects related to the bombing, the museum, and the museum's related special exhibits.

Though the Memorial does not have actual "tours" of the site/museum, I essentially act as a tour guide, interpreting the events and facts of April 19, 1995 to visitors, and answering all questions they may have.

I am also trained in what to do in certain emergency and security situations, and have put those actions into practice when situations have arisen, such as a medical emergency experienced by a visitor only weeks ago.

How would you describe your time at TAParchitecture?

I first completed a mentorship at TAParchitecture through the mentorship program of Putnam City School District in Oklahoma City, OK. I started in January 2007, shadowing the architects, learning the ins and outs of the job, and gaining valuable hands-on experience through completing a mentorship project, which included designing a house according to specifications provided.

After completing the mentorship in May 2007, I was offered a summer job at the firm, which I am currently working on. I perform a variety of tasks, including filing, typing, scanning marketing/PR articles, and other office-related duties.
