Who was your most influential mentor and what did they teach you?
I've been blessed with two mentors.
Above all, my academic advisor in college was spectacular. She pushed me and nurtured my love of writing. She challenged my thinking and forced me to realize that 100% is never enough. She taught one particular class that was mandatory, a desktop publishing class. She knew I was a writer at heart, but she saw the value in learning publishing software. I admit, I fought her on it - But she was right. I found out that I have a talent for layout and design and I actually love to do it! I've used desktop publishing in each professional role I've had since college.
Mentor number two is the president of Realty One. The first day I interviewed with her, I was terrified. She was very put together and stylish and had a fantastic view from her office. I had done some research on her career and knew that she was someone I very much wanted to emulate. She networked with important people and is well respected - I was terrified. Upon leaving the interview, she asked if there was anything else I wanted to say, anything at all. I thought about it for a minute and realized that I really wanted that job. Really, really, really wanted it. So I told her. Four "really"s and all. I got the job. I knew in that moment that the reason I wanted that job so badly was because I wanted to learn from the best - her. She had two valuable nuggets of wisdon that she regularly dispelled. The first was "Be where you are when you are there." That was something as a young professional that I had struggled with but hearing her say it clarified it in my mind. I needed to focus on work at work, and home at home. To let either enter into the other's time would cause one to suffer. It was a valuable lesson and it has become my mantra. Her other saying was "Have a weekend." In real estate, weekends are the busiest time for agents, so it was important to her that her agents worked hard, but made time for themselves and their families by actually HAVING a weekend....

How would you describe your time at Calfee, Halter & Griswold?
I learned a lot in a great deal of time. I was told before I started that one month at a law firm is the equivalent to 6 months somewhere else and I found that to be true. I amassed an extensive portfolio of newsletters, attorney biographies, and press releases that I wrote during my time there. I also designed over 20 sponsorship ads using QuarkXpress , as well as 10+ event invitations. I managed the content of our corporate website, and was the guardian of the Calfee brand, ensuring that every piece of material seen by the public was consistent with our message and mission. Additionally, I handled basic administrative work, collateral design and organization and compiled responses to RFPs for a variety of potential clients, including the Ohio Attorney General....

How would you describe your time at Realty One Real Living?
Before a massive downsizing, I loved every minute of it. Realty One's offices were bright, encouraging, and energetic. Real estate, although experiencing a tough market, can be very exciting. I spent the majority of my short time there in a learning curve - filled with conference calls, speaking with many of the 1,800 agents, and some of the more senior positions. I compiled weekly sales powerpoints, wrote and distributed press releases and wrote ad copy, all while overseeing 5 student interns and 1 staff member....

How would you describe your time at Portage Path Behavioral Health?
Portage Path was my first job out of college. The majority of my time was spent researching, writing and designing monthly newsletters (both internal and external), press releases, media updates and public service announcements. I also researched, wrote and designed the annual reports, which included feature-length profiles of client success stories. Portage Path was a non-profit organization without an advertising budget, so I had to create articles that quoted the expertise of our physicians, but were still interesting enough for the local papers to print. Secondary responsibilities included general office work, maintaining our mailing list, and coordinating with vendors. Overall, it was fascinating and I was fortunate to work with such talented psychologists....
