If you won $50 million dollars tomorrow, what would you do first?

I would start shopping for real estate! I would pay off the relatives' mortgages that had houses and buy houses for those that didn't have one.

Horizon Books February 2002 to October 2007
Internet Sales Mgr., Floor Mgr., Scheduler, Events Coordinator

How would you describe your time at Horizon Books?

I was hired to be the internet sales mgr. at this independent, family-owned bookstore and then took on other responsibilities as warranted by the business. I became a floor manager and directed staff in projects, work, flow, and customer service. I also acted as a liaison between upper management and the staff. My motto became, "Listen to the message (it's valid), and not the way it is delivered."
I also did the schedule for 26 people to cover a 17-hour day, 7 days a week. The final "hat" I accepted was the Events Coordinator position. I published a monthly newsletter and oversaw the updating of the website and co-op. The most important part of this role however, was scheduling music, community events, and author signings. So whether it was finding time for a 10-person chess club to meet, or arranging a "Harry Potter" party for 10,000, I handled it all with grace and a smile!

Traverse Bay Woolen Company May 2001 to February 2002
HR/ Office Manager

How would you describe your time at Traverse Bay Woolen Company?

This was my first job after relocating to Traverse City and I loved it! I was hired to be the office manager and took over as HR as well. The human resources aspect of the job was my favorite. On the human resources side I cleaned up all the employee files (past and present) to comply with state and federal guidelines. I processed all new hire and termination paperwork, managed benefits, including short term disability, and reconciled all benefits invoices. I also liaised with our immigration lawyer to hire our guest workers from Jamaica in the summer. The thing I am most proud of though, is the complete revamping of the Employee Handbook to follow company, state, and federal guidelines. No more double standards!
As the office manager, I cleaned up and streamlined ordering supplies for 4 stores, answered telephones, made travel arrangements, and oversaw all print, radio, and television advertising.
While I was only there a short while before taking the position at Horizon Books, I learned a lot about myself and what I am capable of doing.

Cycolor, Inc. (Formerly Mead Imaging) June 1997 to January 2001
HR Assistant/ Exec. Admin. Asst.

How would you describe your time at Cycolor, Inc. (Formerly Mea...?

My time at Cycolor was one of great learning, great hope, and ultimately, great disappointment. Cycolor was a high-tech manufacturing company that made revolutionary film for digital cameras. There was boundless optimism for its future, but unfortunately, it never quite caught on or was marketed right. The company went through several lay-offs before I relocated to Michigan, and closed soon after I left.
I had worked there previously as a Japanese instructor for their management, but the contract ended. I was then asked to come back to become the HR assistant, and the executive assistant for the Senior V.P. of R&D. On the HR side, I was the temporary workforce coordinator and worked closely with our temp agency to find good people. I was also in charge of attendance and vacation tracking, COBRA, and general clerical duties.
On the Exec. Asst. side, I made all travel arrangements for our V.P. of R&D and then our Senior V.P. from Japan. I also reorganized and updated all the CDA's and patent files. I was able to utilize my Japanese language skills with our Japanese V.P., our Japanese owner, and the scientists who came from Japan to work on the project.

CBS Personnel Services April 1995 to June 1997
Asst. to VP of the Japanese American Connection

How would you describe your time at CBS Personnel Services?

This was the first job I had where I really got to hone my organizational skills. I took the position as the Asst. to the V.P. of the Japanese American Division at a personnel company and eventually became a recruiter as well.
When I arrived, I worked closely with my Japanese boss to set up a
filing system and electronic database that cross referenced bilingual candidates, open positions, and our Japanese client companies. Did you know Ohio has the second most Japanese companies after California?
I used my Japanese skills to communicate with my boss, his client companies' vice presidents and presidents, and our Japanese candidates. It also came in handy when testing the language skills of our American candidates.
I excelled at finding bilingual engineers just graduating from college that were looking for manufacturing positions.

How would you describe your time at Mead Imaging?

I was a Japanese language and cultural instructor to Mead Imaging's R&D engineers, plant manager, and Senior V.P. of R&D. I taught them language skills as well as Japanese culture, history, and etiquette. We met three mornings a week at 7 a.m. for two hours. They were a dedicated bunch and it was a great experience!... read more

Circulation Desk Clerk

How would you describe your time at Wright Memorial Public Library?

This was a fun job, but not very intellectually or emotionally challenging for me. I think if I had had more self-confidence I would have felt more comfortable asking for additional duties. I had a great time assisting patrons and the reference desk though! My favorite thing was helping kids find just the right picture book for story time, or researching the capitol of Outer Mongolia.... read more
Assistant English Teacher

How would you describe your time at Japan Exchange and Teaching...?

This was one of the most gratifying experiences of my life. I was an assistant English teacher in 9 junior highs in northern, rural Japan. My largest school had 435 students and my smallest had 4! While there, I taught English, published "My English Vocabulary Builder" as a supplement to the regular curriculum, and acted as a liaison for surrounding small towns that would be receiving a new teacher the following year. I was also able to study Japanese with a private tutor, calligraphy, tea ceremony, and pottery.... read more

How would you describe your time at Carleton College, Northfiel...?

My 4 years at Carleton College were a time of tremendous growth and self-discovery for me. I studied Japanese, Asian history, art, science, and music. It was a wonderful liberal arts education that prepared me for anything that comes my way.

But, more importantly, I learned so much more
about myself. As the first person in my family to go to college and then to graduate, it was a frightening proposition to leave home, never having seen the campus, and start this great adventure on my own. At times it was rocky, but I learned to survive, and ultimately to thrive during my four years there.... read more

Susan worked under my direction for almost three years. She coordinated employee scheduling, internet sales, floor management, and most recently special events for a multistore independent bookseller. Susan required little direction. She is self-motivated and volunteered to pick up additional responsibility when we lost our special events coordinator. She is very well organized and would be an asset to any organization.

Susan is an excellent worker who cares about her job performance and her co workers. She has an eye for detail and always gives above what is expected of her.
